Frequently asked questions
Short, honest answers about how BMM treats your mods, your game folder, and your money.
Is BMM free? What do Player and Supporter add?
The core manager — unlimited library, hardlink activation, 5 load-outs — is free forever. Player ($3/mo on Patreon) unlocks unlimited load-outs, the duplicate finder, conflict detection, and all 9 themes. Supporter ($7/mo) adds your name on the Supporter Wall and early access to new features.
Why does Windows SmartScreen warn me?
BMM is currently unsigned, so Windows shows an “unknown publisher” notice on first run. Click “More info” → “Run anyway”. Every user runs the same installer built from the same code; signing is planned as the project grows.
Does BMM mess with my game folder?
No. BMM only ever creates and removes its own links inside the mods folder. It never deletes or modifies a file it didn't create, never touches mods you placed yourself, and refuses to change anything while BeamNG is running.
What's a hardlink, and why does activating use zero disk space?
A hardlink makes the same file appear in two folders at once — no copy is made. Activating a mod links it from Mod Storage into the game folder instantly. (Across different drives, BMM falls back to a copy automatically.)
Where do my mods actually live?
In your Mod Storage folder — by default “BeamNG Mod Library” in your user folder, changeable in Settings. It's yours: plain .zip files you can browse in Explorer any time.
Why must Mod Storage live outside the game folder?
BeamNG's launcher “Clear Cache” moves everything out of the game's current folder — if your library lived there, every mod would be orphaned. BMM warns you if you pick a folder inside the game for exactly this reason.
What's the 5 load-out limit on Free?
Free accounts can keep 5 load-outs (named mod sets). Only unlocked load-outs count toward the limit. Player and Supporter remove the cap.
How does Connect with Patreon work? Do I need to stay online?
You click Connect, approve on patreon.com, and BMM stores a signed entitlement — no keys to paste. It re-checks roughly twice a day and keeps working offline for 14 days between checks, so a flaky connection never locks you out.
Does BMM support BeamMP?
Yes — BeamMP is a first-class target. Every mod can be active in BeamNG, BeamMP, or both independently, and load-outs are per-target, so your multiplayer pack stays separate from your single-player set.
Installer or portable — which should I pick?
The installer is the normal choice: Start-menu entry, easy updates. The portable .exe runs from anywhere without installing — handy for testing or locked-down machines. Both are the same app.
How do I update BMM? Do my mods and load-outs survive?
Install the new version over the old one — that's it. Your library, load-outs, settings, and Patreon connection all carry over untouched.
If I uninstall BMM, what happens to my mods?
Nothing. Your mods live in Mod Storage, which uninstalling never touches. Reinstall later and re-import to pick up where you left off.
My antivirus flagged the download — why?
Unsigned apps from small developers sometimes trip heuristic scanners. The installer is built from the same code every user runs. If your scanner quarantines it, restore it and add an exception — or grab the portable build.
Can BMM break my game?
It's built not to: it never modifies game files, never touches anything while the game is running, and deleting a mod sends the .zip to the Recycle Bin — not into the void. Worst case, deactivate everything and you're back to vanilla.
A mod shows as “conflicting” — what does that mean?
Two active mods are trying to change the same thing — the same vehicle, map, or file path. The game will load only one of them, so BMM flags the pair and helps you pick which stays active.
